PenguinMicro 05-09-26: P.I.I. Hell So let's get this straight: at school we were taught to never give up any form of personal data to anyone online. What. The. Hell happened to that? Seriously. I wake up one day and boom. The U.K. is asking for it just to even use Google!? === The Situation === So, I've been looking into what has been going on for a while now. It frankly disgusts me. As you may already know, several countries around the world have or are currently pushing laws that would require "age verifying" yourself online. What do all these laws have in common for the most part? They want ID. Now, this seems decent on paper. Kids can't go on adult websites. Seems okay enough, right? This is terrible, actually. The World Wide Web has been one of our last places of expressing ourselves without much worry of someone finding out who we were. Well, that will change very quickly once these laws are pushed. Our real-world selves will be connected directly back to our account. In short, no online personality, just ourselves. We can no longer hide. === The Horribleness of This === So, there's striking issues with this. For starters and like I already have mentioned, privacy is gone. Period. This alone births two other issues: 1: Stalking is much easier. If an account has their real-life identity tied to it, any stalker can just easily grab information. 2: If data leaks, you've just lost immutable data. The first point is self-explanatory, but what about the second? "Immutable" means that it cannot change. So this data isn't like a password that can be swapped if it was in a data breach. This is an ID of you. If this leaks, you have fully lost your identity. It can't be taken back. With your ID gone, several things could happen: * Identity Theft/Fraud * False Purchases Under Your Name * Access To ID-Protected Accounts Why the hell do we want any of this? === Think About the Children! === So now, children. What we have these laws for. If we continue with this, we are directly harming them as well. Children want to learn stuff. They hate being told what to do. Think about your own childhood. Your guardian of some sort tells you that you can't have a cookie. What do you do? More than likely you took that cookie later on in the day when nobody was watching. Let's put this in perspective of what we're talking about now. Government says they can't use the internet. The place where they can learn, where they can talk to friends. They, obviously and fairly, get irritated. So they look for alternatives. The Dark Web. If you're unaware of what that is. It's basically a version of the web not accessible by normal browsers. It's most famous for being a wild west. There are pages there selling bodies, ID (even yours soon, once data leaks happen), drugs, anything illegal. Obviously, it's not all illegal stuff there. Mullvad themselves has pages for their VPN as onion services. However, a ton of it is illegal, and all of that is dangerous. One wrong move and you're basically turned legally dead. Tell me, tell me why we should let children be forced to access such parts of the web just to complete their school work? === Por Fin === Overall, if we don't fight this, this will be the end of privacy and autonomy. Contact your senators, your represenatives, contact officials at city, state, and federal levels. We need to fight.
